Chavez revokes RCTV
Category: Politics | Posted by: Martin Stenflo
Well, Hugo Chavez is shutting down the oldest TV station RCTV in Venezuela. This would seem like a very anti-democratic and authoritarian move on limiting freedom of expression, but would it look much different in other countries, particularly the USA. RCTV was a big player and supporter of the Coup in 2002, has been broadcasting misleading information to mobilize the public against Chavez and has recently tried to incite people to assassinate Chavez. Any TV station in the USA that would repeatedly advocate people to topple the current administration and incite mass protests, would probably have their license revoked.
The film "The Revolution will not be televised", about the 2002 coup d'etat in Venezuela shows the involvement of the private media as a major driving force behind the coup and also how the Chavez government cannot maintain control of the country without control of its own media outlet. A battle of information. Highly recommended! The entire film is available here...
